ISO 55002 guides asset-management-system application—not a maintenance checklist

ISO 55002:2018 provides guidance for applying ISO 55001 asset-management-system requirements. Its public scope spans all asset types and organizations; it does not prescribe a universal preventive-maintenance task list, inspection interval, work-order design, or safe operating decision for a particular asset.

Use the guidance at the management-system level

ISO 55002 helps organizations interpret how ISO 55001 requirements can be applied across an asset-management system. That system includes objectives, decision criteria, responsibilities, lifecycle planning, risk, information, resources, assurance, performance evaluation, and improvement. Maintenance work is one important operating component, but the standard’s public scope is broader than work-order execution.

A useful application record therefore names the organization, asset portfolio, lifecycle stage, stakeholder requirements, decision rights, objectives, applicable edition, and adoption basis. It should connect management-system requirements to controlled processes without pretending that public metadata supplies the organization’s asset strategy or technical methods.

Keep asset strategy separate from task technical content

A maintenance task needs asset identity, function, failure behavior, operating context, OEM and engineering information, legal and safety requirements, condition evidence, interval basis, job plan, parts, permits, competency, acceptance criteria, and feedback. ISO 55002’s management-system guidance does not determine those fields for a pump, building, fleet, network, plant, or public asset.

Teams should resist converting a standards crosswalk into a checklist of supposedly compliant tasks. A crosswalk may identify where evidence belongs; accountable asset owners, engineers, operations leaders, maintainers, inspectors, and authorities still decide the technically valid work within their respective roles.

Test software against the evidence chain it supports

CMMS, EAM, APM, ERP, condition-monitoring, and planning products may support asset records, objectives, risk, work, cost, performance, or assurance. A provider mapping to ISO 55001 or ISO 55002 is official positioning, not proof that a purchased package is configured, adopted, complete, conforming, effective, or fit for the reader’s asset estate.

A demonstration should trace one asset decision from objective and risk through condition or demand, engineering basis, approved work, safe execution, verification, cost, performance review, and improvement. The buyer should identify each system of record, missing handoff, override, accountable role, and retained artifact.

Preserve edition and adoption status

The official ISO page identifies the 2018 edition as published at stage 90.92, International Standard to be revised, and lists ISO/CD 55002.2 as under development. It does not provide a publication date for a successor. Organizations should track the exact edition they use, their contractual or governance basis, the 2020 correction, development status, and any future transition record without assuming timing.

Translate this change into the exact population, record type, workflow stage, decision owner, effective date, and evidence that could be affected. Ask current or prospective providers to demonstrate the named workflow with representative data and an exception—not a polished feature tour. Record what official documentation establishes, what a provider states, what the team observes, and what remains unresolved.

A defensible review also identifies the dependency outside the product. Authority interpretation, policy configuration, data quality, integrations, human judgment, approval rights, release governance, training, and retained evidence may remain customer or service responsibilities. The evaluation should preserve those boundaries instead of treating a technology claim as the complete operating model.
